Snow Hill Cemetery Upkeep

We know from experience it is hard to lose a loved one. Consequently, many residents tend to place items on graves of loved ones to help relieve the loss and hold on to certain memories. These items may be something the deceased loved such as ornaments of animals, churches, flags, flowers, etc. The town appreciates and understands your feelings, but the cemetery, at times, fill up with these items. In addition, these items often interfere with routine maintenance (i.e. grass cutting). After initial burial, only one arrangement is allowed. The town greatly appreciates your removal of multiple and unsightly arrangements. In accordance with Chapter 93: Cemeteries of the Town ordinance, the town is charged with removing certain items. A portion of the ordinance, as it relates to this matter, is provided below:

S 93.03 Grounds Keeping Regulations:

The town of Snow Hill owns and maintains the cemetery, therefore:

(A) The town reserves the right to determine, establish, modify, alter or change the grade of each and every lot, road, driveway, pathway or path thereof, and it shall not be liable to anyone for any such action.

(B) No lot owner shall make any change or alteration in or on any lot, including the removal or change in position of any memorial of any kind, without the written consent of the town, and if so made, the town will restore the lot to its former condition without notice and at the expense of the owner of the lots.

(C) No cement product of any kind will be permitted above the ground on any lot or single grave, and the superintendent of cemetery is authorized and directed to remove it without notification to anyone.

(D) No coping, cubing, fencing,
hedging, borders, corner posts, or enclosure of any kind will be allowed around any lot; and no walks of bricks, cinders, tile stone, marble, terra-cotta, sand cement gravel, wood, or other material will be allowed on any lot or single grave. The town reserves the right to remove the same if so erected, planted or placed.

(E) No trinkets, toys, shells, jars, tin cans, sand, artificial material or anything which in the opinion of the town is unsightly, will be allowed on any lot or single grave. All such articles, materials, and things will be removed without notice, and the town shall not be responsible for the loss or destruction thereof.

(F) After the initial burial, only one arrangement will be allowed per marker, unless a tow urn accommodation is made a part of marker. When, in the opinion of the town, any arrangement becomes unsightly, it will be removed without notice, and the town shall not be responsible for loss, theft or destruction of any arrangement or item placed in the cemetery.
