Donald Davis has earned a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership degree from East Carolina University. Davis is the son of Mary Patricia Davis of Irving, Texas and Amos Artis, Jr. of Goldsboro. He is married to Yuvonka Batts, and he has two sons, Ryan and Justin.

While attending college, Davis served as the mayor of Snow Hill. He also served as an adjunct professor at East Carolina University in the Department of Sociology and part-time Sociology instructor at Lenoir Community College.

East Carolina University is the third largest university in North Carolina with an enrollment of over 24,300 students and the fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system.
