Snow Hill recognized as a Tree City USA for third consecutive year

arbor-day.jpg (Snow Hill, North Carolina)—Snow Hill was honored for its commitment to urban and community forestry. The Town of Snow Hill joined 35 other North Carolina towns and cities in Raleigh Friday March 17 to celebrate Arbor Day. Arbor Day, the tree planting holiday, falls on the first Friday after March 15 in North Carolina.

Snow Hill was recognized for its status as a Tree City USA community for the third consecutive year. To earn that designation, Snow Hill had to establish a tree board to manage trees on public property; commit at least $2 per capita to the community forestry program; hold an Arbor Day celebration and adopt a community tree ordinance with policies for planting, caring for and removing public trees. Snow Hill adopted its tree ordinance on July 23, 2003. The town’s tree body is the Snow Hill Tree Board. The chairman is Dr. Frances Sugg. In 2005, Snow Hill spent $6.37 per capita on community forestry expenses and celebrated their Arbor Day on April 29, 2005.

The cities and towns honored Friday at the Wake County Commons Building in northeast Raleigh, including Snow Hill, received a plaque and had their photos made with State Forester Stan Adams and other staff from the N.C. Division of Forest Resources. Friday’s event was hosted and sponsored by the N.C. Division of Forest Resources. The North Carolina Urban Forest Council and The Davey Tree Expert Company of Raleigh co-sponsored the event. Tree City USA is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Tree City USA provides direction, technical assistance, public attention and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities across the country.
